other:Article Title: Permeation of organic contaminants through PVC pipes Article Snippet: t has long been known that organic contaminants can permeate through plastic pipes and adversely affect the quality of drinking water in a distribution system (Thompson & Jenkins, 1987; Vonk, 1985).. The plastic pipe materials affected include polybutylene, polyethylene, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and the contaminants of interest include highly volatile hydrocarbons and organic chlorinated solvents (Holsen et al, 1991).. Gravimetric sorption tests and pipe-bottle exposure tests to ascertain the susceptibility of PVC pipes to permeation by organic chemicals have indicated that PVC pipe is essentially impermeable to environmental organic contaminants, but permeation cannot be excluded in heavily contaminated situations (Berens, 1985; Vonk, 1985). |
